This tape is designed such that well contents are removed by piercing through the tape with a metal probe. One may remove the entire tape seal if the plate contains aqueous solutions. X-Pierce: Precut Pierceable Films for Automation

Also useful for protecting contents of plate from contamination during multiple manual reagent additions over time. X-PierceTM films are 100 µm thick vinyl with a 20 µm thick adhesive layer, designed for temporary protection from contamination and evaporation for samples in 96-well plates. A precut "X" over each well creates four flaps that easily bend downward when pushed by a robotic probe or pipet tip, allowing sample access without coring or adhesive fouling. A thin adhesive layer and special hairline cuts separating the X-Pierce flaps combine to prevent probes from contacting adhesive and becoming occluded. The flaps return to their original position after sampling for continued protection. For long-term sample protection after sampling, a continuous film should be applied as a second layer. Dimension are 79.4 x 145.5 mm. Sterile product is packaged in 100 µm tamper-evident bags of 25.

One of 3M's core technologies is adhesive tapes. We have characterized the performance of our tapes under a variety of conditions, including an extensive study of the evaporation of well contents and the adherence of our tapes to polymers used in the manufacture of microplates.

Precut Pierceable Films for Automation

New patented X-PierceTM sealing films from Excel Scientific support automation and robotic applications. The vinyl films with a thin adhesive layer protect samples in 96-well microplates from evaporation and contamination. A precut hairline "X" pattern over each well creates four flaps that bend easily when pushed by a pipet tip or robotic probe. This permits access to samples without coring from penetrating the film or fouling from contacting adhesive. Flaps return to their original position after sampling for continued protection. Two removable end tabs and 96 printed well guides assist in positioning the film rapidly on the plate.
