The PrepCon 5 Control System is a universal program which is used in preparative chromatography for controlling preparative HPLC pumps, motor on/off valves, fraction collectors and detectors. It enables isocratic elution, the gradient programming and extraction of up to 4 out of 6 possible solvents, the time control of valves, fractionation, starting the data recording program "PrepCon5 System" or data recording of up to 12 data tracks, etc.

Basic components of the program:
- Control of fractionation using detector threshold values
- Pumps and valves can be controlled via a time table
- Visualization of the equipment
- Graphic display of the amount of solvent used
- Manual control by clicking on the visualization
- Control of accessories (e.g. UV detector)

Optional program components

- Peak sampling module for controlling fractionation
- Graphic time table editor for controlling cyclic purification
- Data recording module

The program window on the display shows the pump status, flow rate, pressure, extracted solvent and valve positions. The pump and valves can be operated manually using the display keys.
As well as controlling fraction collectors, a peak-dependent valve switch can be set up in a fractionating module so this then functions as a fraction collector. The program carries out the peak recognition.
The programming of the operating sequence can either use time units, volume units of the extracted solvent (calculated from the flow rate) or column volume units.
The complete operating sequence is shown on the display in a visualization of the equipment and a time table marking the current step.

PrepCon 5 Data System is one of the first MS-Windows-based chromatography data systems. It was already presented under Windows, release 2, by Bruker-Franzen. The PrepCon 5 Data System is kept on the highest possible technological level to remain an example in performance and ease ofuse.
Today, PrepCon 5 Data System has become a software with a recent conception, developed in C++, and it is compatible with the user interfaces Windows 3.1x, Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Thanks to the great flexibility, all tasks of gas and liquid chromatography can be carried out easily, in agreement with GMP/GLP requirements.
Additional mathematic algorithms are available for special techniques (e.g. thin layer chromatography and gel permeation chromatography).
A number of additional programs is available for tasks like validations, post-run calculations from multiple chromatograms, and many more.
